Washington Market ART
The Friends of Washington Market Park is pleased to present Washington Market ART. Through this program, Friends invites local artists to create art in the park or inspired by the park. The art is intended to be enjoyed by our community and help ensure that the park remains a dynamic, attractive and educational keystone of Tribeca.
The Court Mural at Washington Market Park (2015-present)
The Court Mural at Washington Market Park features original, rotating art installations on the 90-foot-wall of the Chambers Street basketball court. World-renowned contemporary artist Todd James is the first artist to paint The Court Mural. His work will be on display until the next project is selected by BMCC.
Todd James is an American painter and a member of a generation of self-taught artists who have influenced popular culture on every level. James is the co-creator of Street Market, a major work of the post-graffiti movement that was selected for the 2001 Venice Biennale. In 2011, a re-creation of this work was the central installation of the LA MOCA’s “Art in the Street” exhibition. Solo shows include Gering/Lopez in New York, Colette in Paris, Lazarides in London, Nanzuka in Tokyo and V1 in Copenhagen. James has exhibited his work at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia and the Tate Museum in Liverpool. Most recently his work was exhibited in “Bridges of Graffiti” included in the 2015 Venice Biennale. Several monographs of his work have been published. James lives in New York City.
The Friends of Washington Market Park would like to thank BMCC and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, whose shared enthusiasm and sanctioning made this project possible.
Enjoy Washington Market ART and see you in the park!
